Historical Essay on Psychoanalysis in Feance
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
The history of psychoanalysis in France seems to be very peculiar and erratic. In the early days, psychoanalysis was devaluated and rejected by many psychiatrists in France. The nationalism was not exceptional in the every medical fields at that time. Nevertheless Eugenie Sokolnicka and Rudolph Roewenstein contributed to the foundation of the psychoanalysis in France. Above all Roewenstein analysed, taught Lacan, Lagache, Nacht who became the core members of future Paris Society, but thereafter they were separated respectively. The first step in psychoanalysis was not good in France. Psychoanalysis in France was split into SPP and SFP, and then Lacan and Dolto established the Freud School independent to SFP in 1963 directly after his notorious exile. In postwar time, Lacan was a real charismatic leader in the French psychoanalysis. Especially he triggered on the extraordinary booms of psychoanalysis in France. Lacan¡¯s revolution against to Ego psychology was supported by many Marxist and the Left, but his extremely self-righteous metapsychology resulted to the devaluation of clinical property. We cannot comment on the French psychoanalysis without Lacan, and someone estimate the today¡¯s anomie state in the French psychoanalysis as the positive things. But IPA still do not accept many Lacanians, and they are like a parallel running trains. The French was negative to the German-speaking psychoanalysis in 1910s, but Lacan had an intimacy to the German philosophy, and then he showed a very hostile attitude to the Americanized Ego psychology. Though psychoanalysis in France looks very chaotic, the French people have a passionate love to psychoanalysis, and they are only people who made the psychoanalysis to popularize all over the country. They enthusiastically created a new psychoanalysis in the French style. A la francaise!
